Space Detective Drift Marlo works for NASA and the United States Air Force on cases involving space travel. While preparing the launch for a new anti-missile defense system, he discovers what appears to be an alien creature attempting to sabotage the mission. The creature overcomes him and escapes. At a masquerade ball that Claire convinced him to attend, he sees the ‘alien’. The sergeant in charge of security accosts the alien, but Drift tells the sergeant to let the creature go. He then reveals that the alien is Dr. Barcus wearing the costume which he’d acquired for the ball, yet had a solid alibi for when the creature was first spotted.
It is revealed that Dr. Fowler, fearing the technology would be used to devastate mankind, wore the costume to sabotage the mission. After Drift stops an attempt by Fowler to blow up a rocket used to test the defense system, Dr. Fowler goes into a state of amnesia that erases the prior decades of his life.
