Colonel Edward Yeames Cathcart meets widowed Indian woman Ashalata Devi a few years after she loss her husband. The two share a romantic connection and despite the stigma attached with interracial relationships at the time, the two engage in a relationship. Vimal Dhatri is the result of their physical union. As a half English and half Indian boy, he faces prejudice from multiple sources, even his father bears a shame towards his son for his mixed heritage.   Â
