Melisande is the wife of Ra’s al Ghul and in Batman: Son of the Demon her death was revealed to us. One night when Talia was a kid, Melisande caught Qayin in the secret room which Ra’s had, where the early version of the Lazarus Pit was being held.When Qayin saw Melisande he got frightened and started running, Melisande was pushed and she fell into the Lazarus Pit and met her death. All of that happened in front of Talia’s eyes.
In Batman Incorporated, Melisande is shown to have met Ra’s al Ghul at a Live Aid concert where he wooed her by exposing the hypocrisy of it all which later led her to give birth to his daughter Talia al Ghul. However, after Talia’s birth, Melisande was cast out by her husband and forbidden to see her daughter or from using the Lazarus Pit. She eventually meets a young Talia years later in her new role as a fortune teller. She tells Talia that she is her real mother and what has happened to her, which contradicts Ra’s Al Ghul’s story that her mother died in childbirth. She says that she knew how it felt to carry Talia in her womb and advises her to appear helpless and not let him reject her. However, before she can say too much, Ubu removes her from her daughter’s presence and presumably kills her.
Dark Knight Rises
Melisande is portrayed by India Wadsworth. Melisande is the daughter of a local warlord (exact location is unknown) who employed the services of Henri Ducard, the mercenary who would one day become Ra’s al Ghul. Melisande and Ducard fell in love which didn’t sit well with the warlord. Melisande spared Henri the punishment of being condemned to the Lazarus Pit by taking his place. Henri was forced to leave the warlord’s territory while his beloved wife and child rotted in the Lazarus Pit. A few years later, Melisande was raped and killed by the prisoners of the Pit but the man who would become Bane saved Talia from the same fate. When Talia escaped the Lazarus Pit, she found Ducard who became a member of the League of Shadows. Ducard unleashed his wrath on the prisoners who murdered his wife and brought Bane into the League of Shadows.
