Phil Coulson

Origin

Phil Coulson served alongside Marcus Johnson in the Army Rangers and continued supporting his friend as his father’s enemies started to target him. Together, they earned positions with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Creation

Agent Coulson was created specifically for the 2008 live action motion picture, Iron Man, and continued to appear in later Marvel Cinematic Universe films. He made his first literal comic book appearance in the Iron Man 2 tie-in comic “Iron Man 2: Phil Coulson: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1”.

The character proved so popular, he was introduced into Earth-616 canon with Battle Scars #1 under the guise of “Cheese”. His full identity as Phil Coulson was later revealed in Battle Scars #6.

Major Story Arcs

Battle Scars

Agent Coulson, as “Cheese”, was a fellow Army Ranger and teammate of Marcus Johnson. He assisted Marcus as he was pursued by Taskmaster, Deadpool, Captain America, and Orion for unknown reasons. During these events, Marcus knocked out Coulson and left him behind to protect him. While separated, Marcus discovered that he was the son of Nick Fury. At this point, Coulson contacted Captain America. Coulson’s goal was to save his friend’s life by enlisting the help of Captain America, The Avengers, and SHIELD. The end of the series depicts Marcus, now going by his birth name, Nick Fury Jr., joining S.H.I.E.L.D. along with Coulson and reporting to Director Daisy Johnson.

Secret Avengers

Phil Coulson and Nick Fury Jr. have been tasked to put together a new team of Avengers for secret covert operations. He firstly asks Hawkeye and Black Widow to join the team by injecting them with memory altering microchips. There major target was AIM.

After MODOK 2.0 helps SHIELD overthrow AIM, Maria Hill shut down the memory chip program and restarted the Secret Avengers with slightly more transparency, including promoting Coulson to field Avenger.

On one mission, Coulson and Fury went to space for a routine satellite check where they run into The Fury, a heavy they were not prepared for. Coulson and Fury nearly died adrift in space, causing major PTSD for Coulson. Phil would fall off the grid to put himself back together emotionally. Hill assigned Hawkeye to follow Coulson and keep an eye on him.

Hawkeye eventually comforted Coulson to the point he could return to the fold to aid in their battle with an AIM splinter group trying to open a dimensional gateway for China’s SHIELD equivalent, SPEAR.

Squadron Supreme of America

No Caption Provided

Coulson was resurrected with the help of Mephisto and was now a servant of the demon. When the Avengers moved their operations out of the United States with funding and supervision provided by Wakanda, the US hired Coulson for a new top American team. He developed a version of the Squadron Supreme with the thanks of Mephisto’s magic.

Using a dark magic item called the Pandemonium Cube, Coulson was able to rewrite the world in Mephisto’s image. Coulson was now the President of the US, with Mephisto replacing “God” in all of the country’s mottos. The Squadron were now considered Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and the Avengers never existed. The only member with any recollection was Blade.

Unfortunately for Coulson, Blade would reunite as many Avengers as he could and, with Captain America’s help, inspire them to take on the Squadron Supreme. When Coulson entered the battlefield to help his new team, Echo and Brandy were able to combine the powers of the Phoenix and the Starbrand to crack the Pandemonium Cube. This caused Coulson to be trapped in the cube and return to Mephisto’s side in Hell.

Movies

Actor Clark Gregg has portrayed Agent Coulson in all 4 of his cinematic appearances to date.

Iron Man

Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson of SHIELD
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson of SHIELD

When Agent Coulson appeared in the first Iron Man film, he was repeatedly ignored by both Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. Agent Coulson was meant to debrief Stark after escaping his kidnappers in Afghanistan, however his introduction was overly lengthy as he announced that he was from the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. He was a source of humour; providing a running joke throughout the film, which lead to the final revelation of the acronym ” S.H.I.E.L.D.”.

It wasn’t until the movie was nearing it’s climax that his character took a more serious turn. When Pepper Potts had taken secret files from Obadiah Stane’s personal computer, she realized that he life was in danger. Therefore, the next time Agent Coulson approached her she latched on to him and insisted that he and his men accompany her immediately. Subsequently, Coulson led a team of men into the Stark facility where the Iron Monger armor had been created. Agent Coulson clearly demonstrated his training as he lead his team silently through the premises and used weapons technology to break into secure areas.

Iron Man 2

His appearances in the sequel movie, Iron Man 2, were more limited. Agent Coulson didn’t appear until after Iron Man had been in a drunken brawl with War Machine. Coulson aided Nick Fury in explaining the terms of Stark’s House Arrest. Soon after, he announced that he had been called away to a situation that was developing in New Mexico. It was clear that Agent Coulson was a figure of authority within S.H.I.E.L.D..

In the post-credits scene to Iron Man 2, Agent Coulson arrived at the top of a crater to see several trucks and people gathered around something unique. It was revealed to be Thor’s powerful hammer, Mjolnir. It was the first hint at the Thor movie. The scene was repeated within the movie, therefore insinuating that the events of both movies took place at the same time.

Thor

In the Thor movie, Agent Coulson is shown as a figure not only of authority, but of unquestionable political power, too. He repossesses the technology and data recorded by Jane Foster, but remains cool at all times and even offers monetary compensation (although it only serves to infuriate her further). He has the presence of a politician, while acting like a mysterious ‘Man In Black’ who casually steals someone’ life’s work on semi-regular basis.

Later, he orchestrates the security surrounding the Mjolnir crash site. This is most evident when he calls Agent Barton into action, but commands his movements via walkie-talkie. Instead of giving the order for Barton to shoot Thor as he tears through the complex, Coulson let the God of Thunder make his way to Mjolnir. This results in the spirit crushing scene in which Thor (who is still ‘not worthy’ to wield Mjolnir) can not lift the hammer & emotionally breaks down. Coulson calmly analyses his opponent and later interrogates him, determined to learn where Thor was training in several different fighting techniques. The interrogation was unsuccessful, but it was the first time that a darker side to Agent Coulson’s personality was seen.

When Erik Selvig appeared claiming that Thor was really Donald Blake MD, Coulson’s men immediately detected the fake ID. However, it was ultimately Coulson’s decision to release ‘Donald Blake’. Whether it was so they could further observe Thor in a more natural environment, or because he took pity on them is currently unclear. The lighter side to Agent Coulson’s personality is later restored as he comes to a tenuous agreement with Thor (after his immortal powers had been restored). Unintentionally, Coulson became the focus of a joke as Thor addresses him as “Son of Coul”, based on the old Norse tradition the father’s name as a son’s surname.

Avengers

Killed in Action
Killed in Action

Coulson reprises in the 2012 live action adaptation of the Avengers. During the movie it is shown Agent Coulson is a fan of Captain America, having a collection of Captain America trading cards. He was also present while Captain America was revived.

Coulson is one of the two SHIELD agents with Black Widow used by Fury to activate the Avengers Initiative. Coulson escorts Captain America to a briefing on the helicarrier after trying to convince Iron Man from attending the same briefing. After Loki breaks free on the helicarrier, he tries to stop him with a gun based on the Destroyer tech from Thor. Unfortunately, he is stabbed in the back by the god and presumably dies in Nick Fury’s arms.

Coulson’s death proves to be the inciting incident for the Avengers to put aside petty differences and work together. It is later shown that Coulson was saved by experimental SHIELD tech developed to bring Avengers back from the dead and was forced underground during the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier. However, he has not been shown to have any contact with an Avenger since his presumed death.

Captain Marvel

Clark Gregg in Captain Marvel
Clark Gregg in Captain Marvel

As Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, Clark Gregg reprises his role as a relatively new recruit of SHIELD. He is partnered with Nick Fury, still a field agent, when they investigate super soldier Carol Danvers, who happened to fall from the sky. As Fury begins to trust Danvers over his own supervisor, who was replaced with a shape-shifting alien, Coulson disobeys orders to take out Fury, solidifying the trust seen through the earlier MCU movies.

Returned to Life
Returned to Life

Days after his death at the hands of Loki, Nick Fury ordered extreme measures to be taken to return Coulson to life. S.H.I.E.L.D. medical cut open his skull and by stimulating the sensors of the brain, the doctors were actually able to bring Coulson back. The process, however, was extremely, inhumanly agonizing for Coulson, who begged the doctors to let him die. In order to cope with that pain his memories were altered to believe he had recovered in Tahiti, after being “dead” for only eight seconds.

After his recovery, Coulson returned duty and assembled a small, highly trained team of agents including; black-ops specialist Grant Ward, ace pilot and weapons expert Melinda May, weapons engineer Leo Fitz, and bio-chemical researcher Jemma Simmons. Their base of operations is a large plane called the “Bus”.

The Team
The Team

On their first mission the team investigated a man named Mike Peterson, who was able to survive an exploding building. Coulson and Ward abduct Skye, a Rising Tide hacktivist who had filmed and posted Mike’s exhibition of his powers, taking her back to the “Bus” for questioning. At first she refused to cooperate, but is eventually persuaded to share what she knows. The team discovers that Peterson had been supplied with a device by an unknown organization that granted him his powers. After visiting the site of the explosion, Coulson’s team is able to recreate it and learn that it was caused by another subject exploding due to Extremis. While attempting to get info to the team, Skye is kidnapped by Peterson, now on the run, and makes her give him a clean slate. Coulson’s team is able to track them down and subdue Peterson without him causing mass damage. With Peterson in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, Coulson offers Skye a place on his team.

Soon after, the team is sent to Malta to rescue Dr. Franklin Hall, a S.H.I.E.L.D. asset and old teacher of teammates Fitz and Jemma. Coulson and Agent Ward infiltrated the compound of Ian Quinn to reach Hall, but found Hall unwilling to leave as he was determined to destroy the supply of Gravitonium procured by Quinn. In his attempt to destroy the supply, Hall was seemingly lost, enveloped by the Gravitonium. Believing that it was what Hall would have wanted, Coulson ordered the Gravitonium be stored at the Fridge in an unmarked vault.

Interrogating his Protégé
Interrogating his Protégé

Coulson became aware of a number of jewelry heists that he suspected were being committed by his old protégé, Akela Amador. Coulson and his team tracked her down and discovered that she was being controlled by an unknown handler through a bionic implant in her eye. They manage to subdue Amador, hijack the implant’s signal, and ultimately remove it. Coulson and May then track down Amador’s handler, only for the man to drop dead from his own implant.

Next the team is assigned to retrieve Chan Ho Yin, a Hong Kong with pyrokinetic abilities, who had been abducted by a Centipede agent named Raina. They discover the Rising Tide leaked the information that led to his capture and the blame falls on Skye. She protests her innocence, claiming she knows another hacker who could have done. They head to Austin, Texas where Skye spends the night with the fellow Rising Tide hacker, Miles Lydon, warning him of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson and the rest of team arrive and arrest them both. They then fly back to Hong Kong and raid the Centipede facility, freeing Chan. Having grown mentally unstable Chan, now calling himself Scorch, attacked Coulson and May. Seeing no other option to subdue him non-lethally, Coulson ordered Agent May to inject him with a larger dose of Centipede, causing him to overload and detonate. Afterwards Miles is released from custody, now fitted with a tracking device that logs his computer activity. Skye is fitted with a similar device and permitted to remain on the team after she reveals that the reason joined the team and worked for Rising Tide was to find her missing parents, the only clues being a heavily redacted S.H.I.E.L.D. file. Coulson promises to help Skye find out what he could. True to his word, during a visit to the Hub, Coulson looked up the unredacted file. He told Skye the document was actually about an unidentified S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who dropped Skye off at the orphanage, choosing to keep the rest of the information secret until he knew more. To this end, he recruited Melinda May to help him.

Coulson soon began to question the circumstances of his recovery and have trouble with simple actions that should be performed through muscle memory. Also, he noticed every time Tahiti was mentioned, Coulson would automatically reply, “It’s a magical place”. Eventually he decided to investigate the matter himself and requested access to his “Death and Recovery” report, only to be told that he didn’t have access to the file.

Taking on Centipede
Taking on Centipede

In order to counter the new Centipede super soldiers Phil recruits Mike Peterson to his team. The team traces Centipede to an abandoned factory, and walk into an ambush. Coulson’s team discovers that the soldiers were subjected to the same eye implant to which Amador was subjected. Afterward Mike tells Coulson his thoughts about joining S.H.I.E.L.D full time, afraid to return to his son. Coulson assured him his son would think no different of him and told him to think on his decision. After a call to his son Mike informs the team that Centipede had abducted his son threatening to kill him if Peterson did not turn himself over. When Coulson escorts Peterson to the arranged prisoner exchange, Peterson reveals that Centipede really wants Coulson, not Peterson. After the exchange, Peterson tries to rescue Coulson, but Centipede sets off an explosion, apparently killing Peterson. After Raina escapes with Coulson, she tells him that he only needs to give Project Centipede the information regarding how he came back to life the day after he died.

Recalling the Past
Recalling the Past

Coulson is initially tortured by Edison Po, a Centipede operative, who tells him that their leader, the Clairvoyant, had been unable to sense Coulson since his resurrection. The Clairvoyant unsatisfied with Po’s methods kills him and has Raina continue the interrogation. Using a device that stimulates memory recovery, she helps Coulson to remember the horrific, catastrophic pain that he endured in the process of bringing him back and the bizarre machine that worked on his exposed brain. Fortunately Coulson’s team arrives before he could reveal any of this to Raina. Back aboard the “Bus” Coulson removes Skye’s tracking bracelet.

While the rest of his team is investigating an incident at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, Coulson and May follow a lead on Skye’s parents tracking Richard Lumley, the only surviving agent file, to Mexico City. Lumley reveals to Coulson that S.H.I.E.L.D. had designated the infant Skye as an 0-8-4, an object of unknown origin, and that all the other agents involved in the case were systematically killed afterward. After returning to the plane Coulson received a call from Ian Quinn who taunts him saying, “The Clairvoyant says hello”.

Father and Daughter

Following a led on the Clairvoyant, Coulson and the team board a train in Italy where a Cybertek security team is shipping an unknown package to Ian Quinn. The team splits into groups, with Coulson and Simmons posing as a father and daughter while Fitz and Skye work with Ward and May to track down the package. However, the Cybertek team catches on causing Coulson and Ward to jump off the train, which mysteriously disappears afterward. Meet back up with May at the “Bus” they find the train and Simmons, but Fitz and Skye are gone. They track the two to Quinn’s compound and raid it. Quinn is arrested and they discover Skye near death. Simmons trying to help, but can only sustain her temporarily by placing her into a hyperbaric chamber.

Coulson and the team rush Skye to a S.H.I.E.L.D. medical facility to save her life. However, the doctors are only able to stabilize her, forcing Coulson to bring her to the same location where he was revived. The team is joined by agents John Garrett and Antoine Triplett. Coulson and Garrett interrogate Quinn and learn that the Clairvoyant had him shoot Skye, so he could learn how Coulson came back from the dead. The team travel to the “Guest House” to recover a miracle drug called GH-325. Coulson, Ward, Garrett and Fitz enter the facility and eliminate the two guards there only to find the place rigged with explosives. Fitz is able to find the drug, while Coulson finds a room marked “T.A.H.I.T.I.” Inside, Coulson finds more of the drug as well as its source; the upper half of a blue-skinned humanoid corpse. Everyone is able to get out before the facility implodes and the drug is administered to Skye, despite Coulson’s reservations. After their next mission, involving the Asgardians Lorelei and Lady Sif, Coulson approaches Skye and tells her he believes GH-325 was alien in origin based on his discovery and information provided by Sif. Coulson swears that they will get answers, beginning by tracking down the Clairvoyant once and for all.

A Meeting of Minds
A Meeting of Minds

Several weeks later, Coulson calls together agents Garrett, Triplett, Blake, Sitwell , and Victoria Hand requesting that they join his team in their hunt for the Clairvoyant. They split into teams of two in order to pursue leads on different suspects. Agents May and Blake investigate Thomas Nash, a catatonic man who once claimed to be a psychic, where they encounter Mike Peterson, now called Deathlok. Peterson critically injures Blake, but not before Blake tags him with a tracker bullet. The team concludes that Nash is the Clairvoyant and they trace Deathlok to an abandoned horse racing track, where they briefly encounter him again before he escapes to the sewers. However, they discover a hidden room where Thomas Nash is hiding, who surrenders. He then begins boasting that he will always be watching them and that Centipede will kill Skye, enraged by this Ward shoots him dead.

Standoff with May
Standoff with May

Back on the Bus, Coulson realizes that Thomas Nash was not the real Clairvoyant, but a decoy. When Skye presents her findings from the S.H.I.E.L.D. psychological files, they realize that the Clairvoyant must be a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. with access to the same files. Coulson accuses the detained Ward of working with the Clairvoyant and shooting Nash to mislead them, but they are interrupted by Skye, informing them of May’s secret communication line that Fitz had discovered. Coulson and Skye end up in a standoff with May in the Bus’s hangar, but before May can explain why she cannot identify who she’s been reporting to, the Bus is remotely hijacked by Victoria Hand. Coulson tranqs and locks May in the interrogation room with Ward, believing she is a traitor. When Garrett’s jet is attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D. drones Coulson helps him out and he rejoins the team. After receiving an encoded message on the S.H.I.E.L.D., Skye deciphers it to reveal HYDRA’s infiltration. This leads Coulson to believe Hand is among the traitors and the Clairvoyant. When the team arrives at the Hub, the group splits into teams to capture Hand and save Simmons. Coulson, May, Garrett and Fitz manage to capture a computer room in the Hub, but while talking with Coulson, Garrett accidentally reveals information about Raina that Coulson never disclosed to anyone; outing himself as the true Clairvoyant. In the ensuing battle, Coulson and May manage to kill the HYDRA agents and capture Garrett. Ward volunteers to accompany Hand to the Fridge so he can see to Garrett’s imprisonment personally.

Providence
Providence

Left in charge of the Hub, Coulson begins to reorganize the base until Colonel Glenn Talbot contacts him, informing him a military team is en route. Not trusting Talbot, Coulson orders protocol “Odyssey” evacuating all agents and leaves with his team, now including agent Triplett. He orders Skye to erase the identities of all the team members, including Ward. However, when Coulson collects the team’s badges, he discovers a hidden message with coordinates to the Canadian wilderness. There they discover the hidden S.H.I.E.L.D. base, Providence, run by Eric Koenig. Coulson learns from Koenig that Fury is alive but is told to keep the information secret. He also learns from May that Fury did not oversee the T.A.H.I.T.I. project.

Coulson & Audrey
Coulson & Audrey

After learning the the Fridge had be overtaken by HYDRA and all the inmates released Coulson decides its up to them to stop the escapees. He takes Fitz, Simmons, and Triplett to Portland in order to confront Marcus Daniels, a superhuman with energy absorption powers, who is obsessed with Audrey Nathan, a cellist and Coulson’s love interest. After rescuing Audrey and discovering that while incarnated Daniels’ powers had been augmented, they devise a plan to lure out Daniels. The team is just barely able to overload him with gamma radiation which causes him to explode, incidentally knocking out Audrey. Coulson briefly comforts her before withdrawing, planning on telling her the truth someday.

“If I come out, will you shoot me? ‘Cause then I won’t come out.”

Back in Providence Coulson’s team discovers that May, Ward, Skye and Koenig are gone. Simmons discovers Koenig’s body while Fitz finds a message left by Skye revealing that Ward is a member of HYDRA. Before they can do react Providence is assaulted by Colonel Talbot and his troops, having been led there by Hill. Talbot demands that the team turn themselves in, but Coulson manages to convince Hill to help him and they escape. The team is able to locate Ward and Skye to an airstrip in California where Hill stalls Ward long enough for Coulson to sneak on board through the landing gear. Coulson manged to free Skye and the two escape from Deathlok in his car, Lola. Afterwards, the team retires to a hotel, where Skye reveals she left a trap in the hard drive. Later, May returns and shows Coulson the contents of a flash drive; a message from the director of T.A.H.I.T.I. to Fury. The file is a video of Coulson himself informing Fury that T.A.H.I.T.I. must be shut down because of horrific side effects the drugs had on test subjects, which could only be mitigated by erasing the victim’s memory of what happened.

Eventually, the team connects Project Centipede, Deathlok, and Garrett to a common source: Cybertek. Coulson and May the company in order to activate Skye’s Trojan Horse she had left on the hard drive, only to find file cabinets instead of mainframes. However, looking trough them they learn that Garrett was the first subject for “Project Deathlok”, which began in 1990. Coulson’s team locate the Garrett’s HYDRA base in Cuba, but it is empty except for several Centipede soldiers. The team is able to activate Skye’s Trojan, while collapsing the building on the soldiers. Coulson, Triplett, May and Skye then conduct an attack on the Cybertek facility, with Coulson going after Garrett, who has become unstable due to the GH-325. Coulson engages Garrett but is quickly overwhelmed until Nick Fury arrives for support. Coulson and Fury push Garrett back, with Deathlok delivering a fatal blow once he learns Skye has saved his son. However, Garrett survives and attempts to transform himself into a new Deathlok, but Coulson vaporizes him with the 0-8-4 from Peru. In the aftermath, Ward (severely injured by May) and the Centipede soldiers are arrested and Ace is reunited with his aunt. Fury appoints Coulson as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., asking him to rebuild it the right way. This leads Coulson and his team to a secret base run by Billy Koenig, Eric Koenig’s brother. That night Coulson awakens in the middle of the night and begins exhibiting signs of the same mental degeneration that Garrett suffered.

Several months later Coulson discovers that HYDRA is after a Level 10 assist called the Obelsik, the first 0-8-4 recovered back during World War II, when several of his agents are attacked while the try to obtain intel on it. Matching the assailant’s DNA to Carl “Crusher” Creel, an individual supposedly eliminated from the Gifted Persons Index. They realize that Creel would go after Glenn Talbot, newly promoted to Brigadier General, in order to get into the secure facility were the 0-8-4 was stored. Coulson sends Skye and May to protect and then abduct Talbot, bringing him back to the Playground. There Coulson tried to convince the General to work with him against HYDRA, but Talbot adamantly refused. Sedating him, Coulson has him dropped off somewhere in the desert. He then orders Skye, May, Triplett, and Isalbel Hartley’s mercenaries to infiltrate the base where the Obelsik was stored and retrieve it. Unfortunatly, Creel had also managed to infiltrate the base and things start to go downhill, however, Coulson ordered his agents to continue with the mission as planned. Skye, May, and Triplett manage to steal a quinjet with cloaking technology and escape while Hartley and her mercenaries escape by car with the 0-8-4. Unknown to the team, the quinjet was a secondary goal of the mission, as Coulson believed they could duplicate it’s cloaking technology.
