The Devil May Care

Hack is leader of the Indianapolis Grendel clan, which runs the Indianapolis 5000 race, the most important event in the region. He is tough and respected, and knows how to lead. He has just installed an exciting new racer, Malka, within the race. The clan runs the town. Everything is good.

One day, after letting his clan go crazy and partially destroy the town, as they often do, he and some of his lieutenants, Skid and Lugey, go to the hospital to find one of their own wounded men, Pogo. The hospital director, Dana, furious at the fact that the Grendels keep sending her so many wounded, shoots Skid in the leg and tells them to leave. Surprising everyone, Hack orders them to do just that. He would rather have a well-run hospital than worry about revenge.

His lieutenants, however, see this as weakness, and begin to plot a takeover. Meanwhile, Hack is intrigued by the principled Dana, who is so different from everyone else he knows, and they start a hidden affair. Hack has trouble conciliating his newfound romantic side with his tough, brutal image, but falls deeper and deeper in love, even though they occasionally fight.

Dana asks him to keep her unhappy and wayward son, Albert, out of the Grendels. Hack does so by having Malka challenge him to a race and embarrass him badly. But this idea backfires. Albert swears revenge on both Dana and the Grendels. Meanwhile Lugey and Skid try to kill Hack, along with a gang of other Grendels. Hack isn’t as weak as they think, and kills them all, hanging their heads from his door.

Albert goes into hiding and starts killing Grendels and setting off bombs, but no one knows it’s him. Rumors start to fly about vampires, and everyone is worried whether the upcoming race will be safe. Hack, who is in charge of security, gets put under more stress.

Albert kills a racer, Kill Martin, from the rival Bloomington clan. The Bloomington clan confronts Hack and asks for recompense. Hack tries to call for order, but Malka suddenly steps up. She says she’s taking over Indianapolis, and Bloomington can take Hack as payment for Kill Martin. Everyone agrees, and Hack is taken prisoner. They torture him, but he manages to escape. Albert has attacked the race and killed many racers and Grendels in the meantime. Hack goes to the hospital and convinces Dana to come with him. Despite all the violence he has gone through, he is filled with hope for the future.

Albert sets off another bomb and blows up the hospital. Dana is knocked out, and Albert shoots Hack in the leg. Dana wakes up and kills Albert, but breaks her legs when his scooter crashes. Hack tries to convince Dana they can still have a happy life, but Dana is filled with despair, and kills Hack and herself by shooting them both through the head as they share a final kiss.
