The Devil May Care

Malka wins an upset race in the Indianapolis 5000, beating an old champion, Pogo. She becomes one of the coveted “first heaters.” The Grendel clan that runs the race is a little unsure of their new winner, since she seems to represent a new generation that the leaders think may be too weak. However, she manages to gain their respect by quieting down, by force, a bunch of rowdy Grendels one night. From then on, she becomes a welcome part of the team.

The clan leader Hack falls in love with a local doctor, Dana. She convinces him to make sure her son, Albert, a very low-level Grendel racer, leaves the clan. Hack gets Malka to challenge Albert to a race, in which she completely embarrasses him. He leaves the Grendels in shame, but vows revenge and goes into hiding. Meanwhile, Hack begins to lose support among his clan due to his perceived weakness and lack of focus on the race.

After wreaking havoc on the clan for some time, Albert kills Kill Martin, the champion racer from the rival Bloomington clan, right before the race. The Indianapolis Grendels are supposed to guarantee the safety of the race, so the Bloomington clan says they’re going to start a war. However, Malka steps up and says she’s taking over the Indianapols clan, and giving Hack to Bloomington as payment for their loss. Both the Indianapolis and Bloomington clans happily agree. In doing so, she shows that not only is she an excellent racer, but a smart leader and politician as well.

Unfortunately, Albert has more plans. He attacks the race itself, and one of his men kills Malka.
