The Devil May Care
Klein is second-in-command at a hospital led by the respected doctor, Dana. Their town is run by the Indianapolis Grendel Klan. The Grendels often go on nights of wild excess, killing and generally abusing the local populace. The wounded are brought to the hospital, which is often overflowing with patients. Klein does his best to help Dana in this constantly difficult position.
One day the Grendel leaders, Hack, Lugey, and Skid come in to see one of their own wounded. They are very violent, and beat down Klein as they ask where he is. Dana, fed up, shoots and wounds Skid and tells them to leave. Amazingly, they do. Hack believes a well-run hospital is more important than saving face. This eventually leads Hack and Dana to have a love affair.
Klein, now in a neck brace, tries to keep things in control at the hospital despite the continuing violence in the area, and Dana’s new focus of attention on Hack and away from the hospital. He wants to support her but she doesn’t fully confide in him. Later, Dana’s disaffected son Albert blows up part of the hospital with a bomb as part of his plan to get revenge on everyone he thinks has wronged him, and the hospital faces even more challenges.
More time passes, and Albert makes his final move. He attacks the Grendels’ favorite event, the Indianapolis 5000, and then completely destroys the hospital. Klein’s fate is unknown.
