Origin
Vimal Dhatri was born to a wealthy Indian woman Ashalata Devi and Englishman Colonel Edward Yeames Cathcart. Ashalata was a widow in mourning when she had met the Colonel and Colonel Edwards was a westerner. Their union therefore and subsequent offspring caused much resentment negativity among the locals. Even the servants of Ashalata would tease and taunt the young boy Vimal Dhatri, about his heritage and mixed bloodline. Fearing that her child would be abused, Ashalata sent Vimal to an English military base, where he might have more opportunity and potential to live, and where he might be educated, without the stigma of mixed blood hanging over his head. However among the Englishmen he is subject to cruel racism, from students to teachers and all manner of in-between. When his class has a field day into the jungles of India, Vimal wanders off on his own and encounters a fearsome but seductive Rakshasi, Jara. Near nude with supernaturally dark purple skin, glowing eyes, and sharp teeth, she seems fascinated with Vimal. She disappears before any of his other class mates can see her. Vimal earns a physical beating for wandering off by himself, and in his dormitory he is left battered and bruised when visited again by the mysterious Jara. She offers him power after explaining how long she has existed and how long she will endure. She is fascinated by so much, and she questions Vimal wishing to have answers for her curiosity. Vimal answers her questions, but declines her offer of power. He wishes to fit in with the English and belong. Days pass, but the racism and prejudice Vimal faces becomes unbearable and he is pushed past his threshold. He turns to Jara for her help and with it, his revenge on the people who threatened and abused him commences. Later on without the barriers that were preventing him from succeeding, Vimal is presented with the opportunity to study at Oxford University in England. There he befriends Nicholas Roper, who appears to treat him like an equal, and he also develops a strong attraction for one Ms Penelope Sackville, daughter of the Dean. Slowly Vimal’s unsavory past begins to catch up with him, as he starts to rely more and more on Jara. Â
